Image Stills is a photography studio and consultancy specializing in collections documentation and original visual content.
Based in Rochester, New York, the studio works with institutions, businesses, and select private clients. Assignments range from focused photography and documentation to complex, multi-location projects requiring research, planning, collection control, and sustained creative direction.
The practice is intentionally adaptable. Work may take place in the studio, within active collections and working environments, or on location wherever a project requires. Each engagement is shaped around the material, the setting, and its intended use, producing clear, durable visual resources for access, interpretation, publication, and long-term value.

MATTHEW WALKER
Image Stills is led by photographer and collections consultant Matthew Walker.
Matt’s background in photography, historical research, digital projects, and higher education informs an interdisciplinary approach to documentation and visual narrative. Over more than two decades in the studio and lecture hall, he has developed a practice grounded in close observation, careful research, and the practical demands of working with objects, collections, places, and people. His work with collections and archives is informed by established archival practice and remains centered on photography, documentation, research access, and project implementation.
He has taught photography in the MFA programs at Syracuse University and Visual Studies Workshop, as well as at Ithaca College, and history courses across higher education, during an active teaching career spanning more than two decades.
Matt holds an MFA in Visual Studies from Visual Studies Workshop, an MA in History, and a BA in Communications Studies. His photobooks, Iroquoia (2007) and Recollection (2011), were published by Visual Studies Workshop Press and are held in VSW’s Independent Press and Artist Book Collection.
His photographs are represented in the Menschel Library at the George Eastman Museum, the Light Work Collection at Syracuse University, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.
